Tamale slaughterhouse – serious animal suffering

October 25, 2018

Cows are dragged by their tails and headsWe continue to see serious mistreatment and suffering of animals at Tamale slaughterhouse in Ghana, with no real hope in sight. Despite some of the butchers participating in the EonA and WACPAW training on humane handling in 2017, we continued this year to observe animals being dragged and beaten into this slaughterhouse. They are left for hours if not days without water. Downer cattle, too weak or injured to stand, are dragged by their tails and heads over long distances. Wide, uncovered drains are found throughout the plant, resulting in cattle falling and breaking their legs in them. No mercy is shown, they are then pulled out by their tails. The floors are slippery and animals fall all over the place as they are rushed through the plant and jumped on, in order to force them down onto the floor to have their legs all tethered and then their throat cut (like bread) by blunt knives.

Eyes on Animals has financed the making of drain covers and WACPAW is overseeing the construction and installation but we are insisting that the Board of this slaughterhouse now takes more initiative and responsibility to put an end to this cruelty.

Watch a short video of this slaughterhouse:

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.

#dierenwelzijn
