Today Eyes on Animals met with snack producer Ad van Geloven about their continued import of horse meat from Argentina, where tens of thousands of horses each year suffer severely during transport and slaughter for the Dutch market. In addition, traceability and consequently food safety are very poorly regulated there. Dutch supermarkets have stopped selling this South American meat since we confronted them with the investigations we carried out with our partners AWF/TSB, but the meat suppliers Groenveld and Visser & van Walsum continue the sale of this meat. We are happy to hear that Ad van Geloven now has stopped the sale of horse meat from Canada, where they themselves also found the conditions for horses to be substandard. It is very positive that Ad van Geloven has switched to a Western European supplier for a part of their horse meat. However, we have today urged them to speed up the search for more Western European alternatives, where at least much better legislation and enforcement of horse welfare is in place. Subsequently, consumers will have to be willing to pay more for their horse meat snacks.
