Visit of calf slaughterhouse Fuite Veal

May 10, 2017

Calf slaughterhouse in Tubbergen Today we visited Vuite Feal, a calf slaughterhouse in Tubbergen (NL). Fuite Veal is a relatively new slaughterhouse. We were allowed to observe the entire slaughterhouse: The unloading of trucks, the lairage, the raceway and the stunning area. The handling of the calves went smoothly and without too much distress, but we did have some recommendations to improve the process. For example, installing anti-mounting racks to prevent calves in the lairage from jumping on top of each other, which causes risk of injuries. We also provided tips on how to improve both the raceway and stunning efficiency. Vuite Feal has confirmed they will be putting some of the recommendations into practice as early as this summer.

We agreed with the managers Vuite Feal that we will re-visit the slaughterhouse in Autumn once the improvements have been made. We want to thank them for their willingness to both improve on welfare and provide transparency going forward.

Dear friends and supporters,

As you know, we spend quite some time trying to reduce animal suffering and fear inside slaughterhouses by working directly with the plants.

This work is not always very glamorous. And most of the time we are not allowed to be too public about it.
