Van Kemenade slaughterhouse not interested in animal welfare advice Eyes on Animals

August 18, 2023

Eyes on Animals submitted multiple requests to Van Kemenade in 2022 and 2023, asking for a visit to their slaughterhouse in Asten (NL). Unfortunately, Van Kemenade never responded to our requests, leading us to conclude that they have no interest in our advice.

Van Kemenade also slaughters surplus piglets. These are piglets that are not further fattened due to (small) abnormalities. Piglets are often individually stunned by using manual  electric tongs. Because they are small, active, and quick, this process is not easy. In practice, we often witness bad practices during this procedure. We would have liked to visit Van Kemenade to assess whether improvements are possible using their methods.

We are disappointed and find it unprofessional that Van Kemenade has not responded to us. Eyes on Animals has already engaged with numerous slaughterhouses to discuss improvements and continue to work towards them. Van Kemenade stands as one of the few slaughterhouses that has kept its doors closed for many years.
