Upright catching of laying hens: sharing experiences with the Swiss poultry sector

September 17, 2026

Eyes on Animals recently gave an online presentation on laying hen catching to a broad group of Swiss stakeholders, including representatives from industry organizations, animal welfare labels, animal welfare organizations, poultry farmers and veterinary authorities. The meeting was organized by FiBL, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture in Switzerland, which is currently researching the catching of laying hens and KAGFreiland.

We talked about our experience in the Netherlands, where we have convinced several large and small egg companies to catch their laying hens upright. They have been doing so successfully for years. We explained how catching works in practice and what equipment is used, from the type of crates and trolleys to the machines that clear litter from the poultry house.

We also discussed the recent Dutch court ruling, which concluded that lifting birds by their legs is not allowed under the current EU Council Regulation 1/2005. As a result, the Dutch authorities must take enforcement action as of January 1, 2027. Other topics included machine catching, which is gaining popularity but requires thorough training, well-designed containers and a maximum belt speed, and the importance of good working conditions for catchers. One striking difference: in Switzerland, farmers often catch the birds with friends, family and neighbors, while in the Netherlands this is usually done by hired catching crews.

A real highlight: in Switzerland, broilers have been caught upright for about fifteen years already. That is wonderful news, and a great example for the Netherlands to follow.

It was a pleasure to brainstorm and exchange ideas with such a dedicated and diverse group. Informative and inspiring!

Many thanks to FiBL and KAGFreiland for organizing this meeting.

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.
