When we inspected Yilkay slaughterhouse in Bursa, Turkey a few months ago, we observed the slaughterer poking his fingers deep into the eyeballs of the bulls before cutting their throat. The bulls were screaming out from the pain. We sent the slaughterhouse veterinarian and CVO of Turkey our report and insisted that this cruel treatment be put to a stop.
Today we re-visited Yilkay slaughterhouse to see if they took any action based on our reports. We were pleased to hear that they have since fired this employee.
Another one of our recommendations that they put into place is the installation of more light above the squeeze chute to take advantage of animals’ natural behaviour to move towards lit up areas. Using animals’ natural behaviour helps avoid that employees use force and cruel tools to make them move forward. It is only a small change, there is still lots to do to reduce suffering here…but we must encourage every positive step and thus thank the veterinarian at Yilkay for his engagement. |
