In our effort to put an end to the clubbing of pigs in Ghanaian abattoirs, we taught the workers at this combined pig farm/abattoir how to use a captive bolt stunner half-a-year ago. Unfortunately, the stunner we gave them after this training was no longer functioning after being used intensively for this last month without interruption. Christmas time is always very busy with many more animals being slaughtered than the rest of the year.
The stunner, donated by our team late last year, had been used both on the farm for emergency stunning and in the abattoir, which proved too demanding for a single device. The owner therefore asked for support with an additional captive bolt stunner, so one could be permanently assigned to the abattoir while the other remains on the farm for emergencies. Now that we finally were able to import stunners into Ghana again, we could give them a second one !
We repaired the faulty stunner and also donated a second one to ensure continued humane handling of the animals.
The owner of the farm and abattoir stated that he will never compromise on animal welfare in any way, and expressed strong appreciation for the work being done to help both animals and his people. We encouraged them to continue using the stunners correctly and to maintain them well, so they can be used reliably for a long time.
