Collection center Salland in Wijthmen showed no interest in EonA visit

May 27, 2019

Today Eyes on Animals made an unannounced visit to the Salland collection center in Wijthmen. After a short talk with the owner it was clear he was unfortunately not open to our visit.

Salland collects calves for further fattening in the Netherlands and sheep and goats for slaughter. The owner said there were water bowls for the calves. However, bowls are not suitable for unweaned calves. Unweaned calves are used to drinking from teats or large buckets, and  do not understand how to use a water bowl.

Access to water is a legal obligation for collection centers. Unfortunately, Eyes on Animals see this issue on a regular basis; that the wrong, or on occasions, no drinking facilities are available for unweaned animals.
