WACPAW/EonA conducted a community outreach at Tugu Yapalsi, a farming community in Tamale, Ghana. The community was selected after observing animal treatment here regarding housing, health, and welfare. With support from Victoria (Puumaya), a US volunteer, it was noted that sheep, goats, chickens, and cattle were exposed to harsh weather conditions without shelter, leading to health issues like respiratory problems and diarrhea.
Today we gave an animal-welfare education session at the local Chief’s residence, aiming to educate the community about:
1. Animal welfare principles
2. Economic and health benefits of proper animal housing
3. Responsibilities towards their animals
4. Providing assistance in vaccinating and treating minor illnesses
Community members acknowledged the poor treatment of their animals and committed to improving their care practices. They recognized the importance of providing better care after learning about practical livestock behavior and welfare issues. The EonA/WACPAW team also encouraged them to start building shelters for their animals. The Imam and Wulana expressed appreciation for the shared knowledge on animal welfare.
We will return, with support from the Tamale Metro Veterinary Directorate, to vaccinate and treat all the animals with minor injuries.
