Visit to Ridammerhoeve goat farm where kids are kept with mothers

January 8, 2022

Today Eyes on Animals dropped by Ridammerhoeve Demeter goat farm in Amsterdam Bos. Here a lot of attention and respect is given to the behavioural needs and well-being of the adult dairy goats as well as the goat kids. What rooting and wallowing are to pigs, is climbing to goats, and here at the Riddammerhoeve farm the goats have plenty of high climbing platforms, both inside and outside. There are also numerous scratch brushes for them to enjoy. The goats have the choice of going outdoors and indoors all the time, the floor is covered with a clean thick layer of straw, the density is low so the animals have plenty of room to run and play and the hay was of great quality and smelled delicious. But what makes this farm truly special is that the goat kids are not taken away from the mothers but kept with them in the herd. At birth and for some time after mother and newborns are put in pens together but seperated from the rest of the herd so they can rest together and to be sure that the baby kids drink their mothers’ milk undisturbed. This farm has a shop where you can buy their goat products, but also Demeter free-range eggs from their hens. If you eat animal products, then please chose wisely and consider their shop !

Dear friends,

I first discovered the bad side of factory-farming and industrial slaughter when I was a young girl of twelve.
When I visited a livestock market I saw a pile of sick animals left for dead behind the building. At a huge industrial poultry slaughterhouse, I saw dozens of live chickens walking around the bloody floor…
