Transport company Blom en Zonen expose poultry to freezing cold winds

January 25, 2016

No protection from cold windOn the 14th of January, a concerned-person driving along the A2 highway in the Netherlands filmed a poultry truck from the company Blom en Zonen on its way to a slaughterhouse. Click HERE to watch the footage. It was 3 degrees Celcius out and with the vehicle moving, conditions were made even colder for the poultry on board, being exposed to freezing winds. According to the EU legislation, poultry must be protected from the weather during transport, but Blom en Zonen did not hang a side tarp up to protect the welfare of the birds. The film-maker sent the footage to Eyes on Animals and asked us for help. You can see that the birds were in poor condition; many were dead and most are huddled away from the side of the truck, trying to stay as much as possible out of the direct wind.
Today a team from Eyes on Animals dropped by the Blom en Zonen transport company office to speak to the owners about this concern and hear their side of the story. Unfortunately a young man from the Blom family did not want to talk to us, nor did he want to see the video footage or offer a solution or explanation. He also did not care about the negative effect this would have on the reputation of his family´s transport company. We have written up a report about this transport consignment and are sending it, together with the video footage, to the Dutch authorities now to take care of. Hopefully then the Blom en Zonen managers will take this matter more seriously.
