Training of the Gent highway police on the EU animal-protection during transport laws.

January 18, 2011

training_gent

Today we were invited by the Belgian highway police of the Gent area to give a training on the EU legislation protecting animals during transport. The purpose of our police trainings is to teach police officers the requirements of the welfare-legislation so that they too can inspect livestock trucks passing through their region and sanction those in violation. Today 17 police officers were present. Two veterinarians from the FAVV and the head of Animal Welfare from the Ministry of Health also participated in the event. We have been invited to come back two more times to give the practical side of the training; when together we stop and inspect livestock trucks on the road. One police officer ordered 25 more of our training brochures to distribute to his colleagues in his regional department. We were very pleased with their motivation and interest and look forward to a continued collaboration.

Dear friends,

Despite the extreme heat and high humidity these last days still tens of thousands of pigs were transported to Dutch slaughterhouses. We visited the two largest: VION in Boxtel and VION in Apeldoorn.

Four cows escaped the slaughterhouse when a transport truck crashed. After months of freedom, the police coldly shot the animals instead of letting them go to a sanctuary.
