Practical Training of Official Road Inspectors (ITD) in Lublin – Day 4, Poland

April 6, 2017

The weather is not supporting our work today: we are stopping and inspecting livestock lorries with the Polish Road Transport Inspectors in wind, rain and hail.

The first stopped truck is empty, documents and construction are OK. The second one, a national pig truck, raises our doubts about loading density, but after careful calculations we see that there are no infringements. The next pig transport, however, has severe infringements: the trailer is in bad technical condition, the dividers are bad and pose risk of injury to animals, and moreover no dividers are installed on the lowest deck. As a result, the animals are crowded at the back, resting one on another, so that ones at the bottom have problems breathing. We also note missing information in the transport documents and discrepancy between deck surface area in documents versus reality. The inspectors confiscate the documents of the vehicle and initiate administrative proceedings against the transporter.

Dear friends,

I first discovered the bad side of factory-farming and industrial slaughter when I was a young girl of twelve.
When I visited a livestock market I saw a pile of sick animals left for dead behind the building. At a huge industrial poultry slaughterhouse, I saw dozens of live chickens walking around the bloody floor…

“We want to see calves flying out of this country,” the president of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Tim Cullinan. I want to see calves looked after on the farm they were born on, until they are weaned. So disappointing to see this nonsense again...
