Following the theory-training we gave the day before, a group of WITD inspectors and official veterinarians gather by the highway for the practical part of our training course. We get a very interesting picture of animal transport in this area because we stop many livestock trucks passing through. A short-distance local cattle transport, an empty truck authorised for the transport of pigs and minks, a long-distance transport of 1-day old turkeys and a long-distance poultry truck with spent-laying hens from the Netherlands in overcrowded conditions heading for slaughter in the north of Poland. The training participants inspect the animals, the design of the trucks and crates and the transport papers. The violations detected are discussed. On this particular day, the direct effects of the training are several monetary fines and proceedings started in respect to the transporters. It is a very busy and a very fruitful day. Eyes on Animals, TSB|AWF and the Polish police and veterinarians are putting welfare into practice!
