Deloitte, together with Eyes on Animals, the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals (de Dierenbescherming) and Vion Foods have created an Artifical Intelligence Camera Surveillance Tool to effectively detect and correct animal-welfare problems.
Although current camera systems can help identify animal handling issues, there are significant limitations. Only a random selection of the many hours of video footage is reviewed. This means most welfare concerns remain undetected and it is exhausting for the person who has to watch the footage.
The newly developed video software uses artificial intelligence to monitor how animals are being handled. It detects movement of persons, animals and objects and how they interact. Video fragments that potentially contain deviations from a plants’ welfare-protocol are automatically selected by the systems’ algorithm. These video fragments are presented through a dashboard to be viewed by the Animal Welfare Officer or Manager who can then take the necessary corrective actions.
