Mexican horse slaughterhouse stops slaughter of horses

June 3, 2015

On January 15th 2015, the EU import ban on horsemeat from Mexico came into force. On-the-spot investigation now shows that the plant in Aguascalientes has completely stopped the slaughter of horses, meaning that no horses are slaughtered for the Mexican market or for export to other countries either. In February 2015, the Mexican newspaper „Página 24“ reported that the plant in Fresnillo reduced horse slaughter by 60 % and that the horse slaughter plant in Jerez is on the verge of closure. Eyes on Animals worked hard in 2014 to expose the horrors of the horse transport and slaughter in Mexico and how much the Netherlands was importing from there, leading to important Dutch snack companies and supermarkets stopping the import and the EU investigating further! We are very pelased that finally, real action was taken!
