Today we had a follow-up meeting with the Corporate Social Responsibility manager of Jumbo supermarket. We discussed their newest decisions regarding selling imported horse meat. Since we released our investigative report showing the horrendous transport and slaughter conditions of horses observed in South, Central and North America, Jumbo decided to take some steps. Today we found out that Jumbo has also decided to stop selling horse meat from the remaining plant in Argentina that they were still in contact with. Jumbo no longer sells any horse meat from Argentina, a land flooded with corruption where sadly there is little control or enforcement in animal-welfare. Jumbo continues to import a small amount of horse meat from Uruguay but plans to stop as soon as it can find an alternative and trust-worthy supplier in Europe. We hope that Albert Heijn will also follow Jumbo’s actions. Until now we have not received any news from Albert Heijn of making changes in their import policy.
