EonA and AWF act on serious case of dog neglect

October 11, 2013

While travelling in France for other business, a team of Eyes on Animals and Animal Welfare Foundation was informed by local residents of a small French town about the condition of several dogs begging for food in a parking lot of a supermarket.

The dogs were emaciated and one was showing serious signs of disease (major loss of fur, covered in fleas and ticks, open wounds and a nervous twitch in the face). The team found out that these dogs, left to breed and fend for themselves, were owned  by a neighbouring car yard owner.

We spoke to the owner and expressed our serious concern for his dogs. We managed to convince him to release the most diseased one to us, which we immediately brought to the veterinarian. He was covered in fleas, ticks and has mange. He is now receiving special bath treatments, antibiotics and healthy food.

We sent in a complaint with documented photos to the regional veterinarian authorities, the local animal welfare organization and informed the local gendarmerie. The latter of which told us they had just been alerted of the problem and together with the local welfare organization are planning on seizing the remaining dogs.

We are still involved in the case, and will look for a good home for “Cogo” should he survive.

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.
