Unannounced inspection of Animo pig collecting station

November 26, 2013

Today EonA inspectors visited the pig collecting station “Animo” in the south of The Netherlands. The owner made time available for us and we could look around freely and take photos.

In the pens there was saw dust and the animals had access to water. During our visit a truck with 600 piglets was offloaded. The truck, made in Italy, was brand new. Unfortunately the floor of the loading ramp was very slippery, partly because there were metal instead of rubber strips, which were vertical instead of horizontal, which caused some pigs to slip.

One piglet on the truck was dead, the other piglets looked healthy. They were destined for a fattening farm in northern Spain, so they had a long journey ahead of them.

The Spanish driver made sure, at our request, that his trucks´ water supply worked properly.

We thank the owner for his hospitality.

Dear friends,

Every day, hundreds of thousands of laying hens and broilers are caught and loaded for transport to slaughterhouses. For years, this happened behind closed doors, often in the dead of night, out of sight — not only for consumers, but also for authorities and animal welfare organizations.
