During random observations of the highway in Hungary, a team from Eyes on Animals and Animal Welfare Foundation spotted 3 livestock lorries from the German transport company Hefter drive by. On board were pregnant heifers, loaded on two decks. We trailed the cattle to their destination, a large farm in Romania. The conditions on board were good- plenty of bedding and adequate headspace as 2 of the trucks were built lower to the ground to provide extra vertical space. The cattle were also young and thus not that big yet. We were permitted to enter the farm and watch the unloading. All animals were able to walk out and appeared fit and the drivers handled them calmly. The cattle will be kept for breeding and milk production. Conditions on the farm were difficult to see as it was pitch black outside, but all animals had access to outdoor paddocks and inside the stable there was adequate room.
