Today Eyes on Animals paid a visit to slaughterhouse Diepeveen in Herveld to ask permission to view the slaughtering of young pigs.
The slaughtering process had just finished but we were still allowed to enter. They informed us that they also do Halal slaughter. Inside we saw the installations and a restraint box they made to perform Halal slaughter for cattle. We received an elaborate explanation about it.
Although Halal slaughter of cattle (without stunning) remains difficult for welfarists to accept as the animal experiences the slaughter process while fully conscious, this plant gave the impression of taking concern that at least the installations and restraint equipment were built to better minimize pain and stress.
We hope to return to this plant to get more advice that we can pass on to slaughterhouses in Turkey that continue to have slippery-floors, dark conditions and hang bulls live by one leg fully off the ground.
