Our team has discovered an animal market at Petrič in Bulgaria. It appears to be an illegal market since it takes place on the road in the suburbs of the town of Petrič. The cars transporting sheep, lambs and pigs park at the side of the road. The animals are kept inside the cars or in the small trailers attached to the cars. The sheep are tied by three legs and laid on the dirt beside the car. The pigs and piglets are kept in the trunks of the cars. When a piglet or a pig is bought by the locals he/she is put into a plastic bag and carried like this to the trunk of the new owner! The handling of the animals needs urgently to be improved. There is no market infrastructure. There is no veterinary inspection. There is no shade, water or food for the animals. We are told that this market is held regularly.
The sheep lie on the side of the road outside the van where they were transported in. Their legs are tied.
