Training of Hungarian highway police on how to enforce animal-welfare-during-transport legislation

October 16, 2012

16.10.2012_HU_police_training_Pecs__1Today Eyes on Animals, Animal Welfare Foundation and Welfarm gave a training on the EU animal-welfare-legislation-during-transport to 18 police and traffic officers from throughout Baranya county (Hungary), held in the city of Pecs. During these trainings we teach what EU laws exist to protect animals during transport, what evidence is necessary, what tricks some chauffeurs play, what equipment is needed during inspections and what actions they can take to sanction the perpetrators and help the animals on the spot. Two official veterinarians from this Hungarian department also participated in the training day, and gave a presentation after us on related animal-health and identification issues. The police and these official veterinarians do not have experience in road controls of livestock trucks, but thanks to the training day today, they now know eachother and say that they feel confident enough to start inspecting trucks together on the roads. A date and time is planned for in the near future to inspect livestock trucks all together.

Dear friends,

I first discovered the bad side of factory-farming and industrial slaughter when I was a young girl of twelve.
When I visited a livestock market I saw a pile of sick animals left for dead behind the building. At a huge industrial poultry slaughterhouse, I saw dozens of live chickens walking around the bloody floor…
