Visit to the Pali export assembly centre in Oud-Turnhout

November 14, 2019

Today Eyes on Animals made an unannounced visit to the Pali export assembly centre in Oud-Turnhout. We spoke to the manager and were given a tour. Pali in Oud-Turnhout takes pigs, adult cattle, calves and goats.

The manager says that unweaned calves often receive milk on arrival at their export assembly centre. Pali imports calves from Ireland and Germany, among others. The calves from Germany often go directly to fattening farms in the Netherlands and therefore not via their assembly centre.

We talked briefly about the abuses recorded by L214 and Eyes on Animals at the Qualivia assembly centre in Tollevast (near Cherbourg, France). Pali’s manager said that such abuses at his company would never be tolerated. Such an employee would be fired immediately and he will closely monitor this.

At the time of our visit there were no animals at Pali. The holding areas look clean and tidy. The manager says that piglets are kept on sawdust and cattle on straw. For adult cattle there are large troughs or smaller adjustable automatic water bowls and for the unweaned calves there are troughs with teats. For pigs there are combined drinking and feeding troughs.

We want to thank Pali for the time they have taken to show us around and answer questions.

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.

#dierenwelzijn
