Training course given to Hunland livestock drivers

March 2, 2018

Training course Hunland livestock driversToday Eyes on Animals was hired by Hunland Transport, one of Europe’s largest animal-transport companies with its headquarters in Hungary, to give our animal-welfare training course to a group of their drivers. Our training course consists of a theoretical part to cover how to best take care of animals during loading, the journey and unloading and how to react in unforeseen situations, such as an animal that becomes sick on board or a delay in hot temperatures. During the practical part of the training we head to Hunland’s farm to load cattle onto one of their trucks. Before the animals are loaded, the empty truck is check thoroughly to make sure everything is in working order (all fans are working, water troughs are suitable and functioning etc…). Then animals are selected taking into consideration their size to make sure they will have enough headspace and room to move on board.

Hunland Transport is trying to achieve standards within their company that go beyond the basic minimum protection offered by the often vague EU legislation.  Together with Eyes on Animals, Pezzaioli and the Hungarian officials Hunland is also improving the design of their trucks as well as discussing ideas to improve and harmonize the welfare of young animals being transported and the welfare of animals on journeys during hot weather.

They were an open-minded and engaged group to train. We would like to thank Hunland Transport for their serious efforts.

Dear friends,

After years of our fieldwork and our enforcement requests, the NVWA (the Dutch government inspection authority) is finally taking action.

The NVWA has made it clear to the entire calf export-import industry between Ireland and the Netherlands: transporting unweaned calves for more than 30 hours without milk will no longer be tolerated.

Nee!
