In 2011 Eyes on Animals visited a weekly livestock market in Poland. We were shocked to see how poultry were placed into net bags (made for onions) and handed over like this to their new buyer. The hens got their heads, feet and wings all tangled in the net, and trampled each other. It caused fright, pain and panic among the birds.
Knowing full well we could only reduce the suffering of the hens by offering the market a practical and cheap alternative, we collected cardboard boxes from supermarkets, made air holes and glued on EonA stickers with a message to remind people that there were live animals inside the box and to handle with care. Now, almost 4 years later, a dear colleague of ours from TSB/AWF reports that this idea is still in use at the market! She just visited it and took this photo. We would like to thank Anna for supervising this market and helping keep this idea alive. At least some of the animal suffering was successfully reduced!
