The good news is that last week we checked on transport containers from the company Mantrans used to transport turkeys. The side doors can all be opened, turkeys can be accessed during transport which is good.
But there is still bad news- this is not the case for 90% of the transported broiler chickens and almost 100% of the laying hens in the Netherlands and abroad- where you cannot help an animal in need because there is no access. They are prisoners to their crates and containers once loaded. The only hope we had once to help a broiler chicken with a wing stuck was with the rod of our tripod…but it was very difficult through the bars.
It is time that the poultry transport industry also respects the EC 1/2005 legislation and assures that there is access to birds during transport.
