Meeting with Tamale slaughterhouse Assembly Members

Update from our project in Ghana: our colleagues from WACPAW met with the Assembly members in charge of Tamale slaughterhouse to discuss in detail our suggestions on how they can reduce the stress and suffering of animals. WACPAW left the meeting feeling positive that the slaughterhouse will adopt several major changes and possibly also start stunning the animals prior to … [Read more...] about Meeting with Tamale slaughterhouse Assembly Members, Ghana

Rendering animals unconscious before slaughter

More improvements in Ghana to report on : after the UDS slaughterhouse in Tamale now the Cape Coast Campus slaughterhouse is using the captive bolts we gave them to stun the animals (cattle, shee, goats and pigs) before slaughter. We know slaughter is never a pretty site but imagine what it looks like when animals are left fully conscious while having their throats slit. … [Read more...] about Cape Coast Campus slaughterhouse now renders animals unconscious before slaughter, Ghana

Visit of Vitelco calf slaughterhouse (NL)

October 13, 2017

Moving to the restraint box

On the 13th of October we visited Vitelco Calf slaughterhouse in Den Bosch. Vitelco slaughters 350,000 rosé and white meat calves each year. The unloading went smoothly because, from the truck, the calves could immediately walk into the lairage. There were no sharp turns or dead corners that could cause confusion. To move the calves to the stunner, use was made of the … [Read more...] about Visit of Vitelco calf slaughterhouse (NL)

Eyes on Animals bought 4 captive bolt pistols and 8000 cartridges to bring to Ghana. Today our team, with the coordination of WACPAW, officially donated one to UDS slaughterhouse in Tamale. It is part of the UDS school campus. It is here where slaughtermen can in the future be trained on how to use captive bolt pistolds so that more and more Ghanaian slaughterhouses can … [Read more...] about UDS campus slaughterhouse in Tamale now stuns animals, Ghana

Visit slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana

October 6, 2017

Slaughterhouse in Tamale

On the 6th of October we visited a slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana together with the local NGO WACPAW. The handling was extremely brutal. Animals were hit, tails were broken on purpose and necks were stretched backwards so the animals were forced to fall down. Also the design of the slaughterhouse was a catastrophe. Animals were killed all together in one big room. … [Read more...] about Visit slaughterhouse in Tamale, Ghana
