Deze week ontvangt Eyes on Animals een delegatie van zes Japanse slachthuisdirecteuren en professoren in de dierwetenschappen, bijeengebracht door het Japan Meat Technology Institute (JAMTI). Hun doel? Uit eerste hand leren hoe ze humane slachtmethoden kunnen bevorderen die angst, stress en pijn bij dieren verminderen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vandaag hebben we de groep meegenomen naar slachthuis Willems in Druten, een faciliteit die we al lang waarderen om zijn respectvolle sfeer en innovatieve omgang met dieren. Bijzonder is hun op maat gemaakte bedwelmingsbox voor varkens, ontwikkeld door de manager van het slachthuis zelf. Het ontwerp is gebaseerd op het gedrag en de natuurlijke instincten van varkens (de achterwand is transparant, zodat het varken niet het gevoel heeft dat het gevangen zit of in een doodlopende straat terecht is gekomen), waardoor varkens onmiddellijk elektrisch kunnen worden bedwelmd zonder in paniek te raken. Ook het vee wordt rustig behandeld, \u00e9\u00e9n voor \u00e9\u00e9n, en door een geduldige, goed opgeleide verdovingsmedewerker bewusteloos gemaakt met een verdovingspistool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De ervaring maakte grote indruk op de bezoekende professionals uit Japan over hoe slim ontwerp en rustige behandeling samen kunnen werken om het lijden aanzienlijk te minimaliseren, en over het potentieel van kleine\/middelgrote slachthuizen zoals deze, waar de tijdsdruk niet hoog is en het geluidsniveau laag (in tegenstelling tot veel grote industri\u00eble slachthuizen).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit bezoek maakt deel uit van een voortdurende internationale uitwisseling van kennis, waarbij idee\u00ebn in beide richtingen stromen en langetermijnverbeteringen in dierenwelzijn over de grenzen heen onder de aandacht gebracht kunnen worden. Het is een hoopvol teken dat marktleiders in Japan op zoek zijn naar manieren om systemen van binnenuit te hervormen \u2013 door middel van wetenschap, empathie en samenwerking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bij Eyes on Animals geloven we dat elke stap in de richting van een humanere behandeling van dieren ertoe doet en dat wanneer landen samenwerken, echte verandering mogelijk wordt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
